Historic Meeting of Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot Artists in Gotland
(Page updated August 1, 1999)

The Gotland Declaration

We artists from both communities in Cyprus, where there are such great obstacles to contact and mutual exchange, have found a way to communicate through art in Gotland and work creatively together.

All participants

The result of our common work reflects the spirit of tolerance and understanding which we are taking home with us.

It was an excitement for us to discover the richness of culture that each one of us carries with him. During this week in Gotland we have created friendship, discovered talentes and built bridges which will allow us to carry on these contacts in Cyprus. We have laid a foundation for future common work.

Our plans for the future include common exhibitions of paintings and photos, common concerts, common theatres and publications. We would like to express our deepest thanks to KLYS and Peter Curman, who was the soul in organizing this. And our thanks to UNESCO, the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, the Swedish Institute,  the Leventis Foundation, George Papandreou, The University College of Gotland, the Gotland Municipality and Destination Gotland.

All our workshops worked without the least tension or problem.
