Declaration of KLYS Hässelby Conference March 31 - April 2, 1998 Realising the commitment that writers and artists have to the promotion of democracy, peace, freedom of expression and a culture of mutual respect and tolerance; Recalling the efforts that artists of all lands have made to reach these goals, often at great risks to their lives and well-being; Recognising the rights of all people, regardless of the level of their social, political and economic development to pursue the ideals of democracy, truth, and cultural refinement, to develop their cultures, languages and literatures in freedom, and to profit from each others' experiences; Reaffirming the duties of all writers, artists and intellectuals to continue their struggle, individually and collectively, for national and international respect for the dignity of all human beings; Understanding that the world has undergone tremendous political, ideological and technological upheavals in the past, thus making conferences such as this one indispensable to synthesise all that is good for the destiny of mankind, as well as to protect indigenous cultures; Feeling the necessity to redouble the efforts to foster and consolidate peace and unity in their own societies and among the nations of the world, especially the need to banish war and all forms of violence and violation of human rights, particularly of children, women, minorities and the economically under-privileged: The participants of the KLYS World Conference on Culture, gathered in Hässelby Slott near Stockholm from March 31st to April 2nd, 1998, particularly strive toward the implementation of the following objectives:
