Towards A Cultural
"Agenda 21"

|

| Peter Curman, chairman
of KLYS, opened the meeting by welcoming all the
participants of the World Conference on Culture 1998. A Draft Action Plan has been submitted by the Director-General of UNESCO, Federico Mayor. The plan contains proposals particularly where improving the relationship between culture and development is concerened. On behalf of all the participants of the KLYS conference a letter has been written, suggesting a cultural "Agenda 21". for a broader cultural awareness. KLYS believes that a defined review mechanism must be established and that all member states should submit national reports on their specific efforts to implement the Action Plan once it has been adopted. Without such review and implementation, the entire exercise may be futile, the letter says. Of outmost importance, according to Peter Curman, is that the issue will not be limited to mere declarations. "The success of Agenda 21 is largely due to the fact that it was implemented on local level, where the municipalities and local authorities took their own action plans for the environment. The same thing could be done in the cultural field", says Peter Curman. Is it really realistic to believe that culture would matter that much to the leaders of the world? Definitely, says Peter Curman: "The culture is as much as anything a part of our environment", he concludes. |
