One percent of GDP to the culture

March 31, 1998 13.00
One percent of the public funds in each and every country should be earmarkt for culture. That is one of the innovative proposals which originated at the KLYS conference in Stockholm.

In addition to the letter concerning the cultural "Agenda 21" that will be handed to Federico Mayor at lunch, it has been suggested that a list of urgent matters should be put together and presented to UNESCO. Ashok Vajpeyi was appointed to collect the additional suggestions of urgent matters and, as he says, "it should not be a UNESCO report, but a report to UNESCO".

Besides the proposed one percent for culture, the conference so far has the following recommendations:

A periodic mechanism of cultural monitoring, which is to meet and consider the progress on the various recommendations made by the ministers of culture.

UNESCO must also raise its voice when a violation of cultural rights occurs any where in the world.

What do you think of these ideas?

Give your own opinion by writing to the conference.
