Free Can Yucel Now!

March 31, 1998 13.57
Serzer Duru from Turkey and Neshe Yashin from Cyprus, both participants of the Conference of Culture are writing a letter asking for the liberation of one of the most famous Turkish living poets Can Yucel. He was condenmed recently to go to prision for one a year and four months because of his last speech criticizing strongly the action of the President of Turkey Suleymen Demirel.

The draft of this letter is being send to the Peter Curman, Chairman of Klys and by the afternoon all the participants are expected to sign it. The defence of human rights and freedom of speech in that country are the main concerns.

This is the final draft of the letter which is expected to be signed by all the international delegates gathered at the World Conference on Culture, in Hasselby Castle outside Stockholm.

"The participants of the World Conference on Culture, gathered in Hasselby Castle, Stockholm, Sweden, between March 30th and April 2nd, 1998, wish to protest the prison sentencing of the great Turkish poet Can Yucel, who is 72 years old and ill. The conditions in prison may even cost him his life.

Hereby we also add our protest against all bans and acts limiting the freedom of expression in Turkey."
