Freedom of speech is the foundation of art

March 31, 1998 15.59
Lars Ekenborn from Swedish Photographers Union sees the KLYS conference as an important addition to the ongoing UNESCO conference. It is necessary for artists to meet and discuss issues directly concerning their daily lives. By doing so in connection with the UNESCO conference, hopefully some important question will be debated there as well.

Furthermore, a tribute to the freedom of speech is one of the major aims of the conference, according to Lars Ekenborn. He hopes that the conference will contribute to the freedom of speech in countries where people are still being arrested for expressing their ideas. Freedom of speech, Lars Ekenborn believes, is the foundation for creativity. Without creativity there will be no art and without art there will be no culture. The right to express one's innermost feelings and beliefs without censorship are the most important criteria for human life.

Lars Ekenborn believes that the conference has been a success so far and that some interesting issues have been raised. But, as he says, the conference is still at an early stage, so we will have to wait to see the results.
