Beyond personal tragedy

April 1, 1998 12.08
The Israeli Sami Michael (to the right on photo) spoke about how young people in the Middle East are taught perfecting the art of war. Israeli and Arab neighbors nowadays are more capable of defying each other than making the desert blossom. They have become ignorant how to make peace.

Then his Palestinian friend Izzat Ghazzawi (to the left on photo) spoke. He has himself been imprisoned by the Israelis for his political activity and got to see them as "The Other" - a stereotype of secret service, soldiers and police officers. During his years of imprisonment he read the poems of an Israeli writer and realized that Israelis as well as Palestinians can care about peace and the beauty of life. He got beyond the understanding of "The Other". He then made a personal goal of building a culture of peace for the future. Then everything collapsed. His 16 year old son was killed by Israeli soldiers in the school courtyard trying to save the life of a wounded boy. This tragedy has changed the life of Izzat Ghazzawi, but today he says, "We must think of the living, who deserve life, and the fallen should serve as an example."

Sami Michael asked to make a personal comment in reaction to Izzat Ghazzawi’s tragedy of losing a son. Sami Michael had felt very guilty, since at the time of the killing his own son was serving in the military in the very same city. "I feel I have raised the one who killed your son. I didn’t have the courage to look into Izzat’s eyes as an Israeli father of an Israeli commander soldier."

In the words of Izzat Ghazzawi: "This land is for all of us and we must try to find equality, and more significant value in the existence of man"
