Creating a magazine for both sides on Cyprus
|
|||
Neshe Yashin, poet
from Cyprus, works on a project which involves the
creating of a Web magazine. The magazine, called Hades
(meaning "Let's go) is so far only being produced in
a printed version.In her speech on the theme "Impact of technology on development of culture," Neshe Yashin spoke about how ridiculous it is to live on an island where it is possible to shout from one side to another, but where you can't make a decent telephone call to the next town (on the other side of the border) without being intercepted by the intelligence service on both sides. When they formed the editorial board for Hades magazine, which included individuals from both the Turkish and the Greek side, they tried to meet in a hotel in the buffer zone. However, in the end it was very difficult to get the necessary permits for the people participating in the meetings. It turned out to be equally difficult to distribute the magazine. To do this, diplomats from various countries where used as "messengers". The solution to overcome this problem has been to create an Internet version of the magazine, soon to be launched. "We can see enormous improvements in our contacts, just by the fact that we are now able to send e-mail between us," Neshe Yashin told the conference. The magazine is written by volunteers and will be published on both sides of the island. Want to learn more? Please contact the editorial staff at e-mail: |
